Cleveland Cinematheque

The Cleveland premiere of the 1993 Japanese film Okoge will be shown Friday, October 1 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, October 2 at 9:35 pm. Okoge is a funny, courageous and outrageous melodrama of a young straight woman who loans her Tokyo apartment to a gay man and his married lover. It's been hailed as a satire about Japanese homophobia and it also explores the limited options available to women outside Japan's traditional roles. Written and directed by Takehiro Nakajima; subtitles; adults only. $5 regular admission. 11141 East Blvd in the Cleveland Institute of Art building. 421-7450.

Cleveland State University

The opening concert of the Sundown Jazz Series features Howie Smith, saxophone, and Neal Creque, piano, in a rare duo appearance. The pair began performing together in 1982 as members of the Cleveland Jazz All-Stars. Their typical concert includes primarily their own compositions, although their repertoire includes music by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Tadd Dameron and Edwin London.

The performance is free and open to the public, taking place Sunday, October 3, at 4 pm in Drinko Hall in the Music and Communication Building, 2001 Euclid Ave. 687-2033..

The Magic Fundoshi, a comedy by Donald Richie and directed by Eugene Hare, is being staged October 1-10 at the Studio Theater. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:30 pm, Sunday at 2:30 pm. There is also a 7:30 pm performance on October 3. Admission is $6, $5 for students & seniors. The theater is at 1833 E. 23rd St. 687-2109.

An Hispanic Awareness Week program will focus on the development and advancement of Hispanics through education, awareness and involvement. Sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs and Human Relations. Various times and locations from Tuesday through Friday, October 12-15. The week's events culminate in the Fiesta Latina Dance featuring Impacto Nuevo on Oct. 15 from 8 pm to midnight; $5 admission, $3 students. 687-9394 for details.

The Black Film Series festival features movies from the '20s, '30s and '40s including westerns and several documentaries, sponsored by the Black Studies Program and the African American Cultural Center. Miracle in Harlem, Souls of Sin, and Black Shadows on a Silver Screen are showing October 12-13. Show times are 10 am, noon, 2 pm, 4 pm, 5:30 pm on Tuesday; 8:30 am, 11 am, 2:30 pm, 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm on Wednesday. On November 17-18, Broken Earth and Juke Joint are scheduled; many

Youngstown First Unitarian Church

Musica Femina Flute Guitar Duo, featuring Janna MacAuslan, classical guitar, and Kristan Aspen, flute, perform a “Concert Informance" of classical women's music. October 22 from 7 to 11 pm. $7, more or less.

Oberlin College

The popular San Francisco gay punk rock band Pansy Division is going to be performing at Wilder Hall on Sunday, October 10. Sponsored by the Concert Board and the Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual Union, the group likes to focus on queerness in its original music. The concert starts at 9 pm with opening act Shevil, and costs $2. Akron Symphony Orchestra

The next concert features Gunther Schuller as conductor and Richard Todd, horn, in a performance of Mendelssohn's "The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave);" Schuller's Horn Concerto No. 1; and RimskyKorsakov's "Scheherazade;" at E.J. Thomas Hall, 198 Hill St., University of Akron. The concert starts at 8 pm and is preceded by "Previews from the Podium" at 7 pm. 5358131 for tickets.

Cleveland Metroparks

The "Solar System Walk" is an educational trail providing a scaled representation of the solar system, covering about three-quarters of a mile, in the Rocky River Reservation. It follows the all-purpose trail, beginning at the northern entrance of South Mastick Picnic area, located along Valley Parkway, just south of the Mastick Road

entrance.

The walk is designed to give an appreciation for the enormous size of the universe, with signs posted along the trail marking the Sun and each of the planets at its average distance from the Sun on a scale of one foot equalling one million miles.
